Lemony Snicket’s ‘A Series Of Unfortunate Events’

a series of unfortunate events

Many people have requested me to share what books I like to read. Well, over a period of time, I will be posting my favourite books on my blog. I’ll start off today with something written by one of my favourite authors.

‘A Series Of Unfortunate Events’ is written by Daniel Handler under his pen name ‘Lemony Snicket’. It is one of the best fictional works I’ve ever read! Mystery is one of my favourite genres, and here, Snicket has really pulled it off.

There’s just the right amount of action, suspense and humour, making it an enjoyable experience to read. There’s clear distinction between the characters, so you’ll know who’s like what without having to struggle. ‘A Series Of Unfortunate Events’ also contains surprising plot twists, guaranteed to make the story even more interesting! It’s also similar to a dictionary because of its high vocabulary, and it will enrich your word bank! Here’s part of one of Snicket’s books:

“My, my, my, my, my,” said a voice from behind them, and the Baudelaire orphans turned to find Stephano standing there, the black suitcase with the shiny silver padlock in his hands and a look of brummagem surprise on his face. “Brummagem” is such a rare word for “fake” that even Klaus didn’t know what it meant[…].

Chapter 7

You can see an example of his use of rare words in this part of a book. So if you haven’t heard of ‘brummagem’ before, you’ll find it in ‘A Series Of Unfortunate Events’! Another impressive aspect of Snicket’s writing is the figurative language. This feature really paints a clear image in the reader’s head, adding to the brilliance of the story.

The illustrator Lemony Snicket worked with, Brett Helquist, also produced stunning drawings, so we have a better understanding of what things look like in the story. The pair make a story that is truly unforgettable!

Other than reading the books, I have also watched both the movie and the TV series adaptions. However, I prefer the books over the movies as they have much more detail. It’s easier to understand what the characters are thinking and better to incorporate suspense as it is told from certain characters’ perspective. In the movie, you would be able to know what was happening as you could see all around. There are also more ways that humour can be incorporated in through the narration, not just the action of the characters.

book collection

Overall, ‘A Series Of Unfortunate Events’ is a great collection of books and if you’re looking for something adventurous to read, it is definitely the best to start with. It’s not too fast, not too slow, and there are some brilliant writing ideas to find! Lemony Snicket has nailed mystery and dark comedy with this story – out of 5, I would rate it 5 stars! Watch out for my next posts: I’ll be sharing more on what books I’ve read!

“There are those who say that life is like a book, with chapters for each event in your life and a limited amount of pages on which you can spend your time. But I prefer to think that a book is like a life, particularly a good one, which is well worth staying up all night to finish.”

-Lemony Snicket

I’m Back!

snow picture

Hey pawsome peeps! Sorry I’ve been away for a while now. Don’t worry, I’m not ‘merajuk’! 😉 I just haven’t been able to update as much because I’ve been extremely busy with 1001 things at school. So, when I come back home I am totally exhausted!

Remember when I injured my eye? Well, a lot of things have happened since then! This year, I started teaching Handwriting Club once again and together with my colleague, I run the club twice a week for the Year 1 children! Alongside that, I have also recently been appointed as the Handwriting Mentor for my class! I help my fellow classmates to achieve their handwriting goals! By the way, I can’t wait to share some useful handwriting tips for parents out there!

Other than the role of Head Boy and Handwriting Mentor, I am also one of the school’s four ‘Arts Ambassadors’ – people who represent the school’s different arts (visual art, dancing, singing etc). We recently went on a trip to the Midlands Arts Centre! We visited an exhibition to see the work of other schools and their different takes on the arts.

Then came the PAWSOME event of the month – a taster day at King Edward’s School! I got the chance to experience what type of activities there are and what the lessons are like! It was great! Can’t wait to start my high school journey in September!

This week, my class are going to go to a workshop where we will build a prototype that we have previously designed in school! I’m sure it will be exciting!

So that’s a brief overview of what I’ve been up to lately. And don’t worry, I won’t disappear again! Also, be sure to keep an eye out for my next posts, in which I’ll be sharing a piece about one of my favourite authors! Till next time!

…HELLO 2018!

TPL 1st Jan 2018.jpg

2017 has passed, and as it steps off the stage, 2018 greets us warmly by the hand! At the start of every year, people set ‘New Year’s Resolutions’, their own personal goals that they wish to achieve in the year. From my humble point of view, I personally think it is more like a trend that everyone is taking part in to be the same as others, and after a few days, they will forget everything! Don’t you think life resolutions should come more regularly than once a year? I believe we should be setting our own personal goals everyday, not waiting a whole year to choose them and working on them for another year to achieve only a few of them! Some of the most popular resolutions are:

  • Go to bed early
  • Spend time with family
  • Reduce TV time
  • Read more books

These are almost never stuck to – and they’re things we should be doing every day! Don’t you think that our resolutions are mostly too self-centred? I feel they are quite selfish as we are mostly thinking about ourselves, and not the other people who have helped us a lot, or who are in need! So, this year, why not break the stereotypical trend and put our faith in God to help us achieve what we want. Whilst we help others and continue what we are already doing, doubling the effort, God always has the best plan for us, and if we do good things, we will surely be rewarded in return!

To start the New Year, I pray to God to put my parents on the top of His list for 2018 so I can continue making them happy as they are my main priority in life. How I will do this is:

  • To keep on being a good son to Mrs Mom and Mr Dad every day so I can be able to make them proud and give them what they deserve in return for their love towards me
  • To continue setting a good example to Fatimah and Ali and help them to do the same

I have full faith in God that He has the best plan for me because no matter how much trials I am put through in life, things always work out perfectly in the end with His countless blessings! He is indeed Al-Wahhab (The Supreme Bestower) as He has continuously gifted us no matter what!

And one thing we can all do to start the year on a good note is to give out to those who give to us, starting at home. Surprise our parents by doing something small around the house! Keep a good attitude and volunteer to help our parents. Don’t think of household tasks as chores where we’re wanting a reward in return, think of them as our responsibility as a member of the family. Of course, always be kind to our siblings too and avoid jealousy, or arguments – after all, siblings are some of God’s greatest gifts! Then reach out to the outside world, like the neighbours, and maybe even local community! From small things, like a smile, to big things, like donating money for a good cause, and all the stuff in between, everything can help and each little thing counts towards a better future! So, come on! If each and every one of us does this, then TOGETHER WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD!

p/s: …HELLO 2018!

11 Things I Love About You

Dear Mr Dad,

The 17th of June has always been a date that our family looks forward to. Yes, it’s your birthday and it’s right next to Father’s Day (Lucky you!)! That’s why I’m writing this post!

Over the years, you’ve been a PAWSOME father and a great husband for Mrs Mom, and you’ve made a lot of sacrifices for us. Ever since I was born, you’ve been like my best friend and you haven’t failed to keep Little Miss Diva and Ali the Salt Bubba happy too! You’ve got a great sense of humour and you’ve got a heart of pure gold! You’ve supported us and loved us with all your heart and you’ve always stood by our side. You are a very -and I mean VERY – PAWSOME dad! After all, you are the one and only Mr Dad! So, we’d all like to say THANK YOU for everything you’ve done! We really appreciate it! And since it’s such a special occasion, I’ve written a lovely (hopefully you’ll find it that way) poem, just for you!

11 Things I Love About You

A poem written by Omar Mukhtar, The Pawsome Lion on behalf of the whole family

Fatimah The Little Miss Diva, Ali The Salt Bubba and Mrs Mom

I love the way you keep us happy,

The way you sing to us,

I love how you smile at us in the morning,

The way you advise us

I love the way you play chess with me,

The way you comb our hair,

I love how you know how to make us laugh,

The way you help with your great sense of fashion

I love the way you love Mrs Mom,

And how you care for her,

But most importantly, I love the way you stand by our side

Which makes you a PAWSOME father!

And on this special day, I’d like to say…

Happy Birthday! Happy Father’s Day!

From your loving family!

Happy birthday and Happy Father’s Day, Mr Dad! We hope they both turn out to be great days! May God grant all of your wishes and make them the best days ever! 😀

p/s: Dear God,

Please reserve my dad the best place in heaven coz he totally deserves it!

🍰 A Piece of Cake: A Book-less Tragedy! 😵

It was the Easter holidays and I was in my dad’s car 🚗, holding a huge pile of books 📚 in my hands. We were going to the library to exchange them for some new ones. When we reached the library, we started looking for a place to park the car. To our surprise, we found that there were hardly any cars outside it.

“Strange…” I said. 🤔

“Oh well, now we’ve found a place to park the car!” my dad said cheerfully. 😃 He hated the long searches for a space to park.

My dad turned the ignition off and unlocked the doors. I heaved the books up and stepped out of the car. Struggling to see above the books, I staggered over to the library’s main entrance – and discovered that all the libraries were closed for the Easter holidays! I couldn’t believe it! How was I going to live without a single book to read? I was sure to die a slow painful death 💀 in a BOOK-LESS world…

Pawsome Book Club: Paddington at Large by Michael Bond

Hiya pawsome peeps! How’s everything going?

Last week, me and Little Miss Diva went to Thimblemill Library to exchange our old books for new ones for The BFR. Along with the books, we also got some cool prizes! 🏆 Our first was…a BFG – or Big Friendly Giant – pop out bookmark! It is PAWSOME!!!

The other prizes we got were…our first two Collector Cards!!! 🂠 🂠 They feature some of Quentin Blake’s amazing illustrations picked out of Roald Dahl’s books. On the backs, there’s all sorts of things! There’s tongue twisters, practical jokes and more! One of the cards even has a ‘Scratch n’ Sniff’ smell on them! When you scratch it, it pongs badly!!! YUUCK!!!

IMG_2331.JPG

Once again, I am going to be reviewing a book that I have read for The BFR. This time, I have put the scary business to one side and went for something different. The book that I have chosen for this post is…Paddington at Large by Michael Bond!! I can guarantee that Micheal Bond is one of the most PAWSOME writers in the world!

The front cover of this book is adorable and eye-catching at the same time. A chubby lil’ bear in a tuxedo and a red hat! Who wouldn’t want to pick up that book?

The main character (or should I say animal!) in this book is a bear called Paddington and this book takes you through the adventures he has and the mischief he gets up to. You will surely burst into fits of laughter!

I would definitely recommend this book to people who love adventure and have a taste for humour. It is a book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading and I’m sure that many of you will too! You won’t regret it!

Finally, rating! The number of stars that I am giving this book is…5!!! Yay!!! It is probably one of the best books I have ever read! It really deserves 5 stars! If you would like to read this book, visit your local library today and ask about it!

Oh well, that’s all, folks! Remember to look out for more reviews from my Pawsome Book Club! 😉
