Want To Write? Start With Reading!

I’ve received many requests to share my writing tips. Well, to be honest, I don’t really have any, but I’ve always loved to read. It’s been a major part of developing my writing skills and I have to admit, I have ORD – Obsessive Reading Disorder! Just one book a day can stimulate my mind into creative mode and get those imaginative juices flowing. So no, I don’t really have any tips, but I believe there is one core, essential practice which is the foundation of writing.

You. Need. To. READ.

Seem daunting? It might sound like that at first, but it is the key to writing. You’ll need to read to find ideas and check your work. It happens whilst you’re writing! When I say read, I don’t mean read for a day or two then stop, I mean read everyday! Make it part of your daily routine. Make it part of your LIFE! Keep a book close wherever you go, so if you have spare time, you can open it up and peruse with ease.

At an early age, we all learn to read and as we get older, we start to read more difficult texts. We’ve been reading naturally all this time, and yet some people sweat at the thought of having to read something. If you could do it so young, why can’t you do it now?

The action of reading has many benefits. Books can teach us grammar and punctuation skills and language basics. Your vocabulary will be enriched too. Books are like dictionaries – there’s bound to be new words on show! The human brain is similar to a sponge, so it will absorb everything it reads. For me, reading also enlarges my imagination and stimulates my creativity. Books have many other benefits, such as improving your health, helping growth and much more. It’s clear that books are a writer’s best friends!

So now you see why reading is so crucial. We shouldn’t just give up reading because it seems hard or boring. If you did, you wouldn’t be reading this right now! But then there’s the choice of what to read and what’s good to read and what’s bad. Well, like I have said in the previous post, there is nothing good or bad, it’s just what you personally prefer! I love reading science fiction and fantasy, but other people might not. However, even though I like these specific genres, I still read a broad range of books. It’s great to read many books, but if you want, you can find the genre that suits you. The best way to find your perfect genre is to read a range of them, and work out their pros and cons so you will be able to find the one that you like the most. Once that’s done, you can read with relaxation and soon write! Remember, reading is an important step towards making yourself a better writer!

Yes, I think it’s great to read, but when I say ‘read’, I don’t mean just in English. You can read in your own mother tongue or your preferred language! Be it Malay, Urdu, Thai, Arabic, Gaelic, Chinese…you can read in any language you want! Don’t let language be a barrier that stops you from reading! And of course, remember to be bold, be brave, challenge yourself to read, readREAD and never stop reading! Now, if you’ve managed to read up to this point, then you’ve successfully read 581 words! So that’s me sharing my experience with you. Hope you find it useful.

Keep calm and carry on reading so that TOGETHER WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD!

“Never trust anyone who has not brought a book with them.”

Flower Power!🌷

Hey guys! Sorry I haven’t been posting anything recently. I have been SUPER busy at school! This year, I have been chosen as a Digital Leader, I am still teaching in Handwriting Club for three times a week, I am also a Junior Journalist for the school newspaper and God knows what else! 😀 So Mr Dad and Mrs Mom said that I should take a break from some activities outside of school. However, I have still been writing offline and I will be releasing the pieces that I have written on my blog. But don’t worry! I’m back now!

Yesterday, me, Little Miss Diva and Ali Bubba (Baby A wanted to change his name because he doesn’t like being called ‘Baby’ any more, even though he is only 19 months old!) decided to create our own pieces of art – Cupcake Case Flowers! To make them, we used cupcake cases, buttons, paper and some ribbons. Little Miss Diva and Ali Bubba really enjoyed making the flowers; they grinned all the way through!

If you would like to try this with your kids, follow the simple steps below ⬇️ :

  1. Firstly, choose three large cupcake cases and gently flatten them, making sure that they aren’t bent.
  2. Next, apply glue to the back of the cases and paste them onto a piece of paper.
  3. After that, take three smaller cupcake cases that can fit into the middle of the bigger ones, flatten them and stick them in the centre of the big cases.
  4. Once you have done that, choose some buttons to glue onto your flowers (different colours and sizes will make it look more attractive!)
  5. Afterwards, cut three pieces of green ribbon and stick them under your flowers. This will be the stem!
  6. Finally, flatten a small green cupcake case (one for each flower), cut it in half and stick each half on either side of the ribbon to make your leaves. Now your flower is complete!

This is a great activity for children because it can unleash their creativity, it’s fun and it’s easy! I would highly recommend this for people who have little ones at home!

Well, that’s all for today, but be sure to look out for the next post! Bye!

Laffy Taffy!

In the last few posts, you’ve only seen my casual and serious style of writing. But, you haven’t seen my creative side yet! Other than writing, music has always been my passion. Even when I’m writing, I listen to Mozart at the same time. Mozart helps to stimulate my brain more. But not only Mozart, I do love various types of music.

When I was in Moseley (old school), I used to have a band called “The Five Diamonds”. As the name clearly says, there were five of us (best friends) in the band. There was a girl named Ellie, who played the drums, another girl called Natalia, who was a dancer and twins called Antony and Alex. Alex played the fife and Antony sang with me. I have also written a few songs in the past. One of them was for my Dream T-Shirt Boutique and the rest were mostly for the band.

Anyway, remember the post about chocolate mayhem? Well, Uncle Fun has sort of ‘challenged’ me to write a song about Laffy Taffy. For some of you who can’t remember, Laffy Taffy was the brand for my chocolate. Today, I was thinking of what to post when all of a sudden, this idea hit me! I accepted Uncle Fun’s challenge and have a complete song waiting for you!!! 😉

This will also show you my creative side as well as entertaining you.

LAFFY TAFFY

(lyrics by The Pawsome Lion)

Laffy Taffy, it’s really yuffy,

It’ll make you laugh all day long.

Laffy Taffy,

Sold it to my mate named Miffy,

Gave it to her Grandma Jaffy.

Laffy Taffy, it’s so good,

Some people hide it under their hood.

It’s divine, it’s delicious,

It’s scrumptious not vicious.

It’s twisty, it’s turny,

It’s bendy and curvy.

It’s the Laffy Taffy, Laffy Taffy all day long!

Laffy Laffy, Taffy Taffy, Laffy Taffy, Laffy Taffy…

I may not be Wonka but I can dance to Conga,

Coz J.O’s my brotha from anotha motha.

I may not have Loompas but I do have Toompas.

Try and close my factory down, I’ll make yours tumble to the ground.

I might not be toughy but I’m always laughy.

My Uncle Fun won’t believe it but I needed to achieve it,

Coz it’s Laffy Taffy, Laffy Taffy all night long!

Laffy Laffy, Taffy Taffy, Laffy Taffy, Laffy Taffy…

When Harry met Sally, Choccy met Taffy.

This is no black or white, this is coco loves pinky.

When Barbie hugged Ken, Choccy hugged Taffy.

Let’s not get too warm or else we will melt,

Then all that is left, just a messy puddle,

So it’s Laffy Taffy, Laffy Taffy till it’s dawn!

Laffy Laffy, Taffy Taffy, Laffy Taffy Laffy Taffy…

Here’s a video of me singing it! Excuse me and my croaky voice. I had a sore throat! 😦
